Koenig's death leaves William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, and George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, as the only surviving members of the original series' main cast.
American actor Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov in the original Star Trek TV series, has died aged 90.
Koenig was a regular on the show as the boyish and eager Russian navigator of the Starship Enterprise, from season two in 1967 until 1969. He later reprised his role in the six original cast movies from 1979 through to 1991.
His representatives said in a statement: “Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world. He passed of old age at home in North Hollywood last night surrounded by his daughter and niece."
“Best known for his iconic role as Pavel Chekov in ‘Star Trek: The Original Series,’ Walter helped inspire audiences with his optimism, humor, and adventurous spirit. Beyond ‘Star Trek,’ his long and distinguished career showcased his versatility as an actor and his genuine love for his craft. His remarkable talent continued to shine in his later years, most recently with his performance in the short film ‘Mr. Fleischmann,’ for which he received the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards - a fitting recognition of a lifetime devoted to his craft."
“Walter’s legacy extends far beyond the screen. Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it."
The statement concluded: “On behalf of all of us, we extend our deepest condolences to Walter’s family, friends, colleagues, and the millions of fans whose lives he touched over the decades. Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.”
Koenig's death leaves William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, and George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, as the only surviving members of the original series' main cast.
“My heart is heavy,” said Takei in a post on X. “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”
Koenig was the best man at Takei’s 2008 wedding to Brad Altman, his partner of more than two decades.
Takei added: "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."
Born on 14 September 1936, in Chicago, Koenig studied acting at New York's The Neighborhood Playhouse and began getting television roles in the early 1960s, appearing on shows Mr. Novak, Ben Casey, The Untouchables, I Spy and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
After Star Trek ended, Koenig continued acting and wrote scripts for Family, The Incredible Hulk and other shows. He also taught part time at UCLA and other schools.
Koenig also worked in the burgeoning field of computer games, including some with a Star Trek theme. In 1995, he took a role in the CD-ROM game Maximum Surge.
He returned to the science fiction genre with occasional appearances in the syndicated 1990s TV series Babylon 5.
Koenig was married to fellow actor Judy Levitt from 1965 until her death in 2022. Their son, Andrew Koenig, who also worked as an actor and was known for his role as Richard "Boner" Stabone in the sitcom Growing Pains, died by suicide in 2010.
Koenig is survived by his daughter, actress and screenwriter Danielle Koenig.
