TotalEnergies has maximised its output at the Gonfreville refinery to protect the French market from external supply shocks. The facility is operating at its limit to produce essential fuels as energy markets remain disrupted.

To preserve national energy security, the most significant refinery in France has increased its production to maximum levels.

TotalEnergies is operating the Gonfreville site at 100% capacity to ensure that the domestic market remains well-supplied with diesel and kerosene, effectively trying to insulate France from the volatility seen in global oil transit.

According to company reports, this move is a direct response to the increasing difficulty of securing refined products from overseas as the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked.

The refinery, situated near Le Havre, serves as a vital artery for the French economy, processing approximately 250,000 barrels of crude oil every day.

By running the plant at full tilt, TotalEnergies is attempting to also pre-empt potential shortages that could arise from the diversion of tankers away from the Suez Canal.

Many vessels are now forced to navigate around the Cape of Good Hope, a detour that adds thousands of miles and several weeks to delivery schedules, consequently tightening the availability of fuel across Europe.

Industry observers note that the focus on middle distillates, particularly diesel and jet fuel, is a calculated effort to support the logistics and aviation sectors. These industries are particularly vulnerable to price spikes and supply interruptions.

The Gonfreville refinery is currently the primary bulwark against the inflationary pressures caused by these global logistical hurdles, according to energy analysts.

Mitigating the risks of a volatile global supply chain

By prioritising domestic refining, TotalEnergies is reducing France's reliance on precarious maritime routes.

The strategy is not merely about volume, it is also a move to stabilise prices for French consumers who have faced consistent uncertainty at the petrol station.

However, maintaining such a high level of performance involves significant operational coordination. According to the company, every unit within the sprawling industrial complex is being utilised to ensure that the refining process is as efficient as possible.

This includes the optimisation of the distillation towers and the catalytic crackers to yield the highest possible percentage of high-demand fuels.

The objective is to build a sufficient buffer in national stocks, providing a safety net should international conditions deteriorate further.

Despite the heavy workload, the firm stated that safety and environmental standards remain the absolute priority. The surge in activity is being closely monitored by regulators to ensure that the plant operates within its permitted limits.

As France navigates this period of heightened geopolitical risk, the output from Gonfreville remains a critical component of the country's industrial resilience.
