Ice floats on the Hudson River seen on the Staten Island Ferry, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026

Video. Bitter cold grips eastern US as ice forms on rivers

Updated:

New York's East River is covered in ice as freezing temperatures grip swathes of the country in a storm that has killed at least 30 people.

Ice was seen floating along New York’s East River on January 27, as snow-covered areas of the city and landmarks such as the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center formed the backdrop amid winter conditions.

The New York City Ferry suspended its service Tuesday afternoon and warned it may be closed “for several days” due to thick layers of ice floating on the rivers.

Cold weather across the eastern half of the United States is expected to intensify on Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, which said another winter storm could affect parts of the East Coast this weekend.
