Ski resort pushes limits of winter with artificial snow long before the cold sets in

Video. French ski resort starts early artificial snowmaking ahead of winter

Updated:

A ski resort in France’s Auvergne region is producing artificial snow weeks ahead of winter in a bid to secure the season despite warm temperatures and environmental concerns.

In Auvergne, the Super-Besse ski resort is experimenting with early-season snowmaking, managing to cover parts of its slopes with artificial snow even as temperatures reach 10°C.

Resort managers say the goal is to prepare pistes before the Christmas holidays, ensuring a 30-meter-wide layer for visitors.

Tourists, surprised to touch snow in autumn sunlight, questioned the cost and environmental impact.

Environmental groups warn the energy consumption is equivalent to that of 300 households over two months.

Local officials argue the operation helps protect seasonal jobs and supports the resort’s long-term transition plans.
