Video. Iceland volcano erupts, forcing evacuations near Blue Lagoon

Updated:

A volcanic eruption early Wednesday near Sundhnúksgígar forced the evacuation of Grindavík and disrupted tourism at Iceland’s popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

An eruption began at around 04:00 am local time, the ninth to occur in the area since December 2023.

Campers were seen quickly packing up as lava began spewing from a 700-metre-long fissure, according to Iceland’s Meteorological Office.

Guests at the nearby Blue Lagoon spa were also asked to leave as gas pollution levels rose near the eruption site.

While the eruption is not near any infrastructure, emergency teams remain on alert.

Grindavík, regularly affected by recent volcanic activity, was fully evacuated as a precaution.
