Updated:

An Air India plane bound for London’s Gatwick airport crashed during takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all 244 people on board, police confirmed.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner struck a residential area near the airport shortly after leaving the runway, reportedly hitting a hostel for medical staff.

The aircraft was carrying 232 passengers and 12 crew.

Authorities said some residents on the ground also likely died, though exact numbers remain unclear.

Images from the scene show heavy smoke and parts of the plane embedded in a building. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, and Air India has set up a helpline for affected families.
