People reaching age 20, the legal start of adulthood in Japan gathered in the city of Fujisawa to carry the 4 shrines, or "mikoshi" in Japanese, on their shoulders.

They marched along a road toward the sea and waded into the cold ocean.

The ritual is held to pray for happiness and good fortune in the new year.
