US President Donald Trump cautiously welcomes reports that North Korea is open to negotiations over its nuclear programme.
US President Donald Trump has reacted positively, but cautiously, to news that North Korea is willing to give up its nuclear weapons programme if America agrees to enter negotiations.
"I think that their statement and the statements coming out of South Korea and North Korea have been very positive. We have come a long way - at least rhetorically - with North Korea. It would be a great thing for the world, it would be a great thing for North Korea, it would be a great thing for the peninsula, but we'll see what happens", he told reporters.
South Korean officials discussed the topic with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during a meeting in Pyongyang this week.
The North has yet to comment on the issue.
But both Seoul and Washington have cautioned that previous talks have come to nothing and Kim may be buying time and hoping to avoid international sanctions.
