Sales of prosecco have reportedly outstripped champagne for the first time.

Italy has burst France's bubble when it comes to sparkling wine.

Latest figures suggest prosecco sales have topped those of champagne for the first time - 307 million bottles compared to 304.

Globally, the general trend for Italian sparkling wine is fizzing. Sales are up 11.5% in volume since 2013 and 16% in value compared to 2012.

However, it's not all good news. Domestic consumption has declined for the third straight year.

So Italians have clearly corked it - selling more abroad - but drinking less themselves at home.
