Brazil's colourful carnival continued on Monday with more of Rio de Janeiro's celebrated samba schools parading through the specially-built Sambadrome.

The venue is where each entry is judged on elements such as choreography, atmosphere, organisation, and singing.

The processions are famous for their festive atmosphere, but the samba schools take it seriously, and first place results in bragging rights among Rio's mostly poor communities.

The winner of the Carnival championship will be announced on Thursday and will parade once again next weekend.
