The infant was thrown to into the hero of the hour's arms during the attempted rescue of residents trapped in an apartment building blaze.

The moment was captured in footage released today by Dekalb County Fire Rescue Department of a January 3 fire in Decatur, Georgia.

At least 12 people, four adults and eight children, were hospitalised from injuries sustained in the inferno but none were life-threatening.

Most were treated for smoke inhalation.
