A university professor in Taiwan claims to have witnessed the longest ever rainbow.

Chou Kun-hsuan says the iridescent phenomenon, which he caught on camera above the capital Taipei, lasted a staggering nine hours.

A lack of strong wind, a partially cloudy sky and moist air caused by seasonal monsoons, are said to have combined to create the band of colour.

The professor says he now plans to submit it as a world record, potentially toppling a six-hour rainbow which was seen over the UK city of Sheffield in 1994.
