After a 17-year interval Philip Pullman has returned to the themes and lead heroine that made his name with the first instalment of the "Book of Dust" trilogy.

Now the dust has settled, so to speak, on the launch of Philip Pullman’s new book, “La Belle Sauvage”, reviews have been good and it has raced to the top of the bestseller’s charts.

Midnight launches were held in London and fans came out in force for the first part of his new trilogy, “The Book of Dust”. In the author’s words, it is neither a prequel nor a sequel to “His Dark Materials”, but an “equel”, with Pullman returning to the fantastic world of the original trilogy.

After waiting for 17 years for more, some fans can hardly believe the day has come.

“All of a sudden, ‘Oh, it’s actually a reality’, and then it, very strangely, you know, you just come along and you feel all giddy and like you were a teenager again, it’s very strange,” said one happy buyer.

“His Dark Materials” made Pullman an international publishing sensation, selling more than 17 million copies worldwide and translated into 40 languages.
