Millions gathered in Barcelona yesterday (October 10) to watch the announcement that some have wanted for decades: Catalonia’s independence from Spain.

As Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont took to the stage, the gathered crowd went wild as he announced that, along with other regional leaders, he had signed a declaration of independence.

The cheering turned to silence and when he went on to reveal that action would be suspended in order to open the door to talks with Madrid.

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy today asked Puigdemont for more clarity on his declaration accusing him of creating “deliberate confusion” and saying his government wanted to “avoid any confusion created yesterday by Catalan authorities”.
