Ireland clinch a place in the World Cup playoffs at Wales' expense

Spain have come away with a 1-0 win against Israel in Group G rounding off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a ninth victory in 10 games.

Italy however having battled Albania, 1 – 0 head for the playoffs in a bid to reach next years World Cup finals in Russia.

In group D The Republic of Ireland fought their way into the qualifying playoffs after ending Welsh World Cup hopes with a 1 – 0 win in Cardiff.

Ireland finish the group as runners up with Serbia on top who qualify automatically after beating Georgia 1 – 0

And in In Group I Iceland have become the smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup after a 2 -0 victory over Kosovo. It shows their run in 2016 European Championships including a win over England was no fluke.

While Iceland top the group Croatia came in second with a place in the playoffs after a 2 – 0 win over Ukraine.
