At least 36 people have been killed and more than a dozen others injured in a coach crash in northwestern China.

The accident happened late on Thursday night in Shaanxi province when the packed bus smashed into the wall of a tunnel. The bus was en route to Luoyang, a city in central China, from Chengdu, the capital of of Sichuan province.

The Xinhua News Agency said the bus was the only vehicle damaged but it is not clear if any other vehicles were involved in causing the crash.

China has a poor road safety record because of high speeds and aggressive driving. World Health Organization figures from 2013 estimate that in that year alone, some 250,000 people were killed on China’s roads.
