Spain’s former prime minister has met with Venezuela’s opposition leader five days after he was surprisingly transferred from prison and put under house arrest.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is thought to have had a role in securing Leopoldo Lopez’s release from jail.

The pair reportedly discussed an unofficial poll to gauge backing for President Nicolas Maduro’s plan for a constitutent assembly and the military’s role in restoring order and support for a unity government.

At least one person was killed in the latest clashes between anti-government protestors and Venezuela’s National Guard in the western state of Zulia.
