For the European Union, the record 2.4 billion fine against Google is all about choice and protection for consumers.

EU anti-trust regulators say the world’s most used search engine systematically gives prominent placement to its own sponsored results and relegates those of its rivals.

It is the first time that one of the big competition regulators has taken penal action against Google, which has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Google says its data shows people prefer to have links taking them directly to products they want from interested advertisers and not to websites where they have to repeat their searches.
