German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in Mexico to meet President Enrique Peña Nieto the second destination in her two-stop tour of Latin America after Argentina. As for the Mexicans they are seeking a strong alliance with Germany to offset the shadow of Trump’s threatened wall and an updated EU-Mexico free-trade agreement.
For Chancellor Merkel the inevitable Brexit questions cropped up again following Theresa May’s woeful electoral showing with the divorce talks due to get underway on June 19th.
Merkel mused over Brexit: “When Great Britain is ready, we are ready to negotiate. We have finalised guidelines, the plan and I assume that Great Britain, from what I have been told today, will respect the negotiations calendar. We want to do it quickly, respecting the timetable and I don’t see any obstacle in the way of finalising the negotiations.”
It is a busy time for Merkel as Germany hosts the G20 in July with many in the world seeing the chancellor as a key global leader in the light of Donald Trump’s scattergun presidency.
