Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives have won a decisive victory over their Social Democrat rivals in a vote on Germany’s northern state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The CDU won with 33 percent of the vote compared to the SPD’s 26 percent, down from 30 percent
The result is a boost for Merkel ahead of September’s general election.
