Transport workers in Athens have taken part in the first of three 24-hour strikes to object to legislation that would allow the transport organisation to make commercial use of stations.

Metro, urban rail and tram workers took part in the walk-out, leaving a build-up of traffic in the Greek capital.

Workers’ unions say the proposed changes would strip the metro organisation of funds and undermine its public character.
