Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty is 36. She hadn’t left her home, or her bed in 25 years. Until this week.

El Aty suffers from elephantiasis and weighs half a tonne, a stroke caused by her condition has paralysed the right half of her body.

But today she has been lifted by crane into a specially adapted surgery in a hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai.

There she will undergo a weight reduction operation by Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the man who made the whole visit possible by appealing to his government on her behalf.
