The mysterious disappearance of a Chinese-born businessman in Hong Kong has sent shivers through the global financial centre.

Late in January, billionaire Xiao Jianhua was reportedly abducted by Chinese agents from the luxury Four Seasons hotel in the former British colony which returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

A source close to the tycoon, who holds a Canadian passport, says he is now in an unspecified location in China.

Memories are still fresh in Hong Kong of the abduction of five men linked to a book publisher specialising in gossip about China’s leaders.
