The cold war vessel has a long history of technical mishaps, ranging with problems with plumbing to issues relating to its propulsion (witness the black smoke).

Nevertheless, few nations are able to project their power, as forcefully as Russia can, thanks to the sheer firepower and size of its fleet.

And the Kuznetsov’s cargo of Sukhoi Su-33s offer attack capabilities against land, sea and air targets.

The ship is believed to be heading to Syria to take part in its first combat mission since launching in 1985.
