Russian Olympic Committee head Alexander Zhukov announced 271 Russian athletes will take part in the Rio Games amid the country’s unfolding doping scandal.

Speaking at a news conference in Rio, the 60-year-old added that Russia will be the cleanest team at the event due to the constant scrutiny its athletes had been under ahead of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee asked individual federations to decide whether Russians could compete following the country’s doping scandal.

Russia, which narrowly avoided a complete ban from the Olympics, had hoped to have between 272 and 280 athletes declared eligible for Rio.
