Hot and big in the Massif Central for stage five of the Tour de France.
The day turned into disaster for two former champions Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) lost any hope of a final overall victory in Paris, while Spain’s Alberto Contador lost more time on his main rivals.
The stage belonged to Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) who produced a superb solo performance and rode victoriously into Le Lioran in front of an exhausted peloton.
Van Avermaet was on storming form, he dropped the last man riding with him Thomas De Gendt with a killer attack on Col du Perthus the penultimate obstacle of the day with 17.5 kilometres remaining.
He powered on, the Belgian now leads the race.
