Manchester United have rescued their dismal season by winning the FA Cup against Crystal Palace, 2-1 in extra time, their first FA Cup since 2004.

The London side went ahead through a second-half goal by substitute Jason Puncheon, but Juan Mata equalised three minutes later, set up by Wayne Rooney after a memorable dribble across the box. Almost immediately Mata was hooked by Luis Van Gaal. The Dutchman sent on Jesse Lindgard.

That looked inspired when Lindgard scored the winner with a wicked first-time volley 10 minutes from the end as United were reduced to 10 men after Smalling was sent off for a second yellow card.
