FIFA’s ethics committee has been told by investigators that a two-year ban from football for the former director of the German football association for violations of the code of conduct is appropriate. It also recommended that he pay a fine of 26,700 euros.

Wolfgang Niersbach was unable to explain a 6.7 million euro payment made by Germany’s world cup organisers to FIFA during the 2006 bidding process.

He is also under investigation by the Frankfurt prosecutor for suspected tax evasion on the payment. He denies any wrongdoing, but the affair has shocked football-mad Germany.

The committee has now opened formal proceedings against Niersbach.
