Tom Dumoulin has won the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, the first of the season’s blue ribbon cycling events. The first stage was a time trial held in Dumoulin’s Netherlands.
It is his Giant-Alpecin team’s first win of the season.
He won by the slimmest of margins, a tenth of a second, ahead of Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic.
The weather forecast in Italy for the next three weeks looks tough and all eyes are on the 2013 winner Vincenzo Nibali, one of only six riders to have won all three great tours.
But the big question mark hanging over his form, which has been poor since winning the Tour of Oman in February, appeared to be confirmed by his coming home out of the top 30 riders and well down in the field.
