Besiktas’ first match in their newly rebuilt Vodafone Arena will be remembered more for pre-match violence than the game itself.

The first match in the stadium was sold out long in advance but thousands of supporters gathered outside the venue to be close by for the inaugural fixture.

However in an attempt to disperse the fans, that included women and children, Turkish police fired tear gas and water canons at them.

It remains unclear why police reacted the way they did.

Despite the troubles outside of the stadium, inside Besiktas got off to the perfect start in their new home, beating Bursapor 3-2.
