An unfinned octopus has been spotted thousands of metres below the water north west of Hawaii.

Named Casper, due to its ghost-like appearance, the creature highlights huge gaps in our knowledge of the deep sea, experts say.

It’s the first time an unfinned octopod has been spotted so deep in the ocean.

The photo was taken by a remotely-operated underwater vehicle named Deep Discoverer.
