And also... Lenin becomes Lennon; an Oscar at the airport and more

Every Friday journalists from euronews’ various language teams choose a selection of stories from Europe and beyond which may not have reached the international headlines. Ukraine: from Lenin to Lennon As part of Ukraine’s newly-passed ‘decommunisation law’, the head of the Transcarpathia region has ordered the renaming of several streets. One road to be renamed was Kalyna village’s Lenin Street. From now on, it is to be named after Beatles singer, John Lennon. Lenin, Lennon? Vladimir Lenin Street has been renamed after the late Beatle John Lennon. https://t.co/F1wrYOfX5P pic.twitter.com/H1yZwWkyDJ— RFE/RL (@RFERL) 4 de marzo de 2016 France: faulty rifles for the police? According to France Bleu, the Heckler and Koch G36 rifles police have been given are faulty. Experts say the gun does not shoot straight — and is, therefore, not precise — when it is hot or during continued firing. French police say the rifle is not intended for repeated use. The German army chose to discard the same model amid controversy over whether or not it is precise when being fired. Newspaper Le Monde says the model delivered to the French police works fine. Portugal: MP’s ‘symbolic striptease’ in parliament Outspoken Portuguese MP José Manuel Coelho chose an unorthodox way of trying to get his point across in the Madeira regional parliament. He stripped down to his underwear, in front of parliamentarians, to protest against a 106,000-euro fine and the withholding of part of his salary. The penalties had been handed down as part of a defamation case against Coelho. He later said his demonstration was “symbolic” and claimed to be referencing the Bible.
