English Premier League footballer Adam Johnson has been sacked by his club Sunderland a day after pleading guilty to sexual activity with a minor.

The 28-year-old England international midfielder also admitted to one count of grooming a girl under the age of 16 over the internet.

Johnson will stand trial on Friday at Bradford Crown Court for two other counts of sexual activity with a child – to which he has pleaded not guilty.

He was arrested in March of last year but continued to play whilst on bail.

His final appearance for the Black Cats was on Saturday when he scored in his side’s 2-2 all draw with Liverpool.
