Team Sky’s Elia Viviani enjoyed a double victory of sorts on Thursday.

The Italian won a crash-hit stage two of the Dubai Tour and with it took the overall race lead in the four stage event.

Giovanni Visconti of the Movistar Team suffered a minor blip early on in the 188 kilometre trek from Duabi to Palm Jameirah but the biggest crash awaited the bunch as they arrived at the mouth of a tunnel with just over a kilometre to go.

The accident ended the hopes of the pre-stage favourites, Mark Cavendish and stage one winner Marcel Kittel.

Moments later the sprint for glory was on albeit with a reduced number of riders out in front.

After strong leadout from Ben Swift, Viviani blasted his way over the line for his first win of the season.

Sacha Modolo was second and Giacomo Nizzolo third for an Italian clean sweep of the podium.
