Marcel Kittel won the opening stage of the Dubai Tour on Wednesday following a powerful sprint finish in Fujairah.
The first stage of the third edition sent the riders raced over 173 kilometres starting from the Dubai International Marine Club.
The challenge took the star-studded peloton right across the width of the United Arab Emirates.
As the traditional attacks unfolded out in front the main contenders bided their time waiting for the expected mad dash for stage one honours – and that’s exactly how it ended.
Kittel took full advantage of a near perfect lead out from his new Etixx – Quick-Step teammates to power to the front and eventually beat Britain’s defending champion Mark Cavendish and Italian Giacomo Nizzolo.
