Brussels • EU foreign ministers meet to discuss Syria, Ukraine, and Iraq.

EUROPE – POLAND

Brussels • Polish President Andrzej Duda to meet European Council President Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg amid growing strain in ties between Warsaw and the EU capital.
The Polish Prime minister Beata Szydlo is to address the European Parliament session on the next day in Strasbourg, France.

TUESDAY

S.ARABIA, EGYPT, IRAN – CHINESE VISIT

Various • Chinese president Xi Jinping to visit Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran between 19 and 23rd January.

UK – TRUMP

London • British lawmakers debate whether to bar American Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering the UK. The debate is in response to a public petition calling for action against Trump following his calls to ban Muslims from the US. Under parliament rules if a petition gets over 100,000 signatures it has to be considered for discussion in parliament.

WEDNESDAY

SWITZERLAND – TALKS

Zurich • Russian foreign minister Serguei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry meet for talks focused on Syria and Ukraine.

Davos • World Economic Forum annual meeting starts (to the 23rd).

THURSDAY

UK – INQUIRY

London • The report into the death of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko is published. The Inquiry Chairman, Robert Owen is expected to make a brief public statement on publication of his report.

EGYPT – MUBARAK

Cairo • Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak faces a second and final retrial over the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising which forced him from power.

FRIDAY

GERMANY – TURKEY

Berlin • Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on official visit after the explosion in Istanbul which left at least 10 German nationals killed.

SATURDAY

TURKEY – USA

Istanbul • US Vice President Joe Biden holds talks with Turkish leaders, expected to focus on the fight against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

SUNDAY

PORTUGAL – ELECTION

Lisbon • Portugal elects a new president to replace incumbent Anibal Cavaco Silva.

HAITI – ELECTION

Various • Haiti is scheduled to hold a delayed presidential run-off election. Ruling candidate Jovenel Moise faces former government executive Jude Celestin.
