Every Friday journalists from euronews’ various language teams choose a selection of stories from Europe and beyond which may not have reached the international headlines. Brazil: Rio’s Pistorius Paralympic gaffe Rio de Janeiro appears to be promoting the September Paralympic games with an unfortunate picture-word combo. An image of paralympic running champion Oscar Pistorius, who was found guilty of shooting dead his girlfriend in 2013, appears above the tagline “with the love of your life.” Brazilian Internet site UOL reported the gaffe. The Paralympic Committee had published the advert on Twitter, but quickly deleted it once they realised the implications of what they’d done. Why? It’s a necessary part of the religion he follows: Pastafarianism. Pastafarianism preaches about the so-called Flying Spaghetti Monster, which first made an appearance in an open letter from Bobby Henderson to the Kansas State Board of Education, in 2005. Deputy Head of the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate, Vladimir Kuzin, took the request in good spirit. He said:“The next time he is stopped by the traffic police, if he doesn’t have a pasta strainer on his head, his licence will be taken from him.” The strainer, which in this case is knitted and yellow, is allowed as it doesn’t cover Filin’s face. In Russia, religious headwear is allowed as long as it leaves the wearer’s face clearly visible. Filin told Russian media he would wear any headwear he likes, or even none at all…Торжество Пастафарианства в РФ! Раминь, братья и сёстры!!! Первые права с дуршлагом в России! Donald Pugh, 45, posted the photo after seeing the ones the Lima, Ohio, police department had published on their Facebook page. “Here is a better photo that one is terrible,” he wrote in accompaniment. Florida’s Escambia County Sheriff’s Office posted a new shot of Pugh once he’d been arrested. In this one, he was broadly smiling. “How’s this photo Donald Pugh?” they asked. “Maybe that selfie helped people identify you better?” He is a person of interest in a number of cases including misdemeanor drunk driving, arson and vandalism, according to Lima police. Some families said they didn’t appreciate this particular style of education. Sundai, the company owning most of the country’s private schools, took the decision, but not until seven of the 28,000 copies available had been sold. The manual aims to assist students with university entry exams. It contains 710 typical sentences students must learn by heart. Sundai said:“We imagined sentences that were easy for the students to remember and practice.” The book had been prepared by a respected Japanese teacher and had been subjected to strict editorial control, the company added.
