Egyptian security officials say 16 people have been killed after a petrol bomb was hurled at this entertainment complex in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

One official said a disgruntled worker, recently fired from the restaurant at the venue, is to blame for the attack.

The restaurant is in the basement where there was no route to escape.

“The fire was very intense, we could not see who was coming and going from the club,” said a witness to euronews. “Anybody trying to escape suffered serious injuries.”

“I believe police officers spoke to some of the people who work at the night club, as well as the owner,” another witness told euronews. “I heard them saying that the people who attacked the club did so because they were refused entry.”

The initial investigation suggests that some kind of argument took place at the venue.

Egypt’s interior ministry say the petrol bomb was thrown after a dispute erupted between workers and other people at the restaurant.
