Maldives declares state of emergency

Authorities in the Maldives have declared a 30-day state of emergency, citing a threat to national security.

It came two days before a demonstration planned by the main opposition party.

The decision follows a suspected assassination attempt on the Indian Ocean island nation’s President Abdulla Yameen.
