At least eight people have died after torrential rainfall triggered floods in South and North Carolina. The storm dumped more than 45 centimetres of rain in some parts.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said parts of the state were hit with rainfall that he would expect to happen once in 1,000 years with the Congaree River running at its highest since 1936.
