The team are languishing in 10th place in the table.

The announcement came just three hours after the team drew 1-1 in the Merseyside derby with rivals Everton, leaving them with only three wins from their first eight games.

In a statement the club said it had been a difficult decision and that the search for a new manager is underway.

Rodgers succeeded Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish as manager in 2012.
