Spain’s basketball team have returned to Madrid to a heroes welcome after winning Eurobasket 2015.

The side depleted by the loss of a number of its top stars, got off to a bad start, but grew in stature as the tournament went on.

A dramatic semi-final win against hosts France meant a final against Lithuania, which Spain won at a canter 80-63.

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Pau Gasol addressed the crowd: “This team is very special, these players are very special, and sharing this moment with you is marvelous, we are very happy and proud to be here, to get this gold medal in the European Championships and enjoy it with all of you.”

Gasol was simply outstanding and backed his star status with a performance to match.

Gasol’s 40 points against France, in a really tough semi-final, will go down in the sports history.
