In Group A of the Champions League Real Madrid trounced Shakter Donetsk 4-0 thanks to a second half hat-trick from Christiano Ronaldo. Shaktar were down to 10 men in the second half.

In Group B it was a bad night for Manchester United they went down to hosts PSV Eindhoven 2-1 having taken the lead. The defeat was further marred as defender Luke Shaw suffered a suspected broken leg.

One goal was enough for Wolsfburg for three points in the other game. Julian Draxler got the only goal of the game five minutes short of half time in their clash against CSKA Moscow.

Turkey is not known as the quietest place to visit for your opening Champions League match but Antoine Griezman scored a brace in the first half for a 2-0 win for Atletico Madrid. in Group C.

It took Benfica almost an hour to score against new boys Astana – Nicolas Gaitan getting the vital strike Konstantinos Mitroglou added a second without reply.

Defeat at home was far from the perfect start of Manchester City in Group D. Last year’s finalists Juventus took the points with a 2-1 win in what was described as a “tactical battle”.

Sevilla spoiled Borussia Monchengladbach’s return to Europe’s top competition after a 37 year absence with a comfortable 3-0 win. It could have been more Kevin Gameiro missed from the spot.
