Spain moved a step closer to qualifying for the European Championships in France next.

The reigning champions beat Macedonia 1-0 following a freak own goal by keeper Tome Pacovski.

Juan Mata’s initial cross cannoned off the post, onto Pacovski’s head and into the net.

Spain lead Group C on 21 points, two clear of Slovakia who were held to a goalless stalemate at home to Ukraine.

Wayne Rooney became England’s all-time leading goal scorer after his second-half penalty against Switzerland took him past Sir Bobby Charlton with 50 goals for his country.

Harry Kane scored the first as the already-qualified Three Lions beat Switzerland 2-0 to maintain their perfect record in Group E.

The Swiss remain in second place ahead of Slovenia who beat Estonia.

Austria became the latest team to qualify for next year’s finals after a 4-1 win over Sweden gave them an unassailable lead at the top of Group G with two games left.

Second-placed Russia improved their chances of joining Austria courtesy of a 7-0 mauling of Liechtenstein.

Montenegro, who trail Sweden in fourth by a point, beat Moldova to keep alive their slim hopes of making it through.
