Four US Marines have been shot dead at a Navy Reserve Centre in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Local media citing law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.

The gunman is also believed to have been responsible for a separate shooting at a Navy recruitment office ten kilometres away.

Police sources say the suspect was shot dead a couple of hours after he opened fire.

Bill Killian, US Attorney for the eastern district of Tennessee, urged the media not to “put a label” on the nature of the crime.

“The FBI and the other agencies are gonna investigate this case thoroughly. They will determine – after the facts are determined – whether it’s an act of terrorism at all, whether it’s a crime and what the nature of that crime is, or whether it’s a combination of those,” he told the press.

Officials say one police officer and a marine were injured in the attacks.
