Tinkoff-Saxo rider Ivan Basso will be released from hospital on Thursday after undergoing a successful operation to remove his left testicle following the discovery of a cancerous tumour.

The 37-year-old’s partner posted a picture on social media of Basso smiling in his hospital bed post op on Wednesday afternoon.

The two-time Giro d’Italia winner was forced to withdraw from this year’s Tour de France on Monday after it after scans in Pau revealed the presence of the tumour.
