Several hundred Real Madrid fans called for president Florentino Perez to resign at the official send-off for goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas.

It follows a storm of protests over the bizarre nature of the 34-year-old’s tearful news conference at the Bernabeu on Sunday, when he appeared alone to announce his departure.

Casillas, who has only ever played for Real during his career is joining for Portuguese side, Porto.

At the presentation Perez said he had invited Casillas, who he said he had “always defended” and described as “irreplacable”, because of “confused information that has been published that perhaps needs to be explained as it does not correspond with reality.”

“Nobody from Real Madrid asked him to leave the club. You have to look after your legends and Iker is one,” added Perez.

Perez says the club are looking to organise a farewell friendly match, possibly against Porto.
