The funeral was held in Cairo on Sunday of Egyptian-born actor Omar Sharif.

Family, friends and fellow Egyptian stars were among those paying their last respects to the 83-year-old who died of a heart attack on Friday.

A religious ceremony was held at a mosque in a Cairo suburb

After traditional prayers, Sharif’s coffin was driven to the Sayyeda Nefissa cemetery to the south of the Egyptian capital.

Sharif will be remembered worldwide for his acclaimed roles in films like ‘Doctor Zhivago’ and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.

The actor, who also built a reputation as an expert bridge player, had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
