Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to three years in prison for bribing a senator in 2006 in an effort to topple the then centre-left government.

However, the 78-year-old will not have to serve time as a statute of limitations is due to expire later this year before a final ruling will be reached on appeal.
