World number one Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from next week’s British Open at St Andrews after suffering a ruptured ankle ligament.

The defending champion sustained the injury whilst playing football with friends.

He said on his Twitter account he is taking a ‘‘long-term view of this injury’‘ and that he wants to return to action only when he is ‘‘100% healthy and 100% competitive’‘.

The 26-year-old four-time major winner from Northern Ireland could also miss the chance to defend his US PGA Championship title in August, which paves the way for American sensation Jordan Speith to take over the number one spot for the first time in his career.
